The Year of the Pomegranate

The Year of the Pomegranate

Last year, the Armenian Church commemorated the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide with wonderful programs remembering the Legacy of our Martyrs. At Holy Martyrs, we placed banners on the church facade proclaiming “the Blood of the Martyrs is the Seed of the Church,” recalling with gratitude, our forefathers and mothers, survivors and descendants of the Genocide, who built our church. This year, we will continue to build upon the theme of the legacy of our martyrs with a focus on Nurturing the Seeds for our Future. At Holy Martyrs, this year will be proclaimed the “Year of the Pomegranate.” The pomegranate is the symbol of Armenia and represents abundance and fertility. Pomegranates are considered by many faith traditions to be the fruit of the tree of knowledge.

In the Christian Church, the pomegranate symbolically represents the Church. The seeds of the pomegranate, though separated by thin membranes, hold tight together, the same way the Christian Church holds all Christians around the world together in Christ’s love; separate but not divided. The pomegranate shows unity in diversity. The crown of a pomegranate represents Jesus’ crown and His sovereignty over the world. The red color symbolizes His salvific blood that was shed for all.

Throughout 2016, the pomegranate will be the focus of many programs at Holy Martyrs, including a new “Pomegranate Ministry” for families with newborns. My hope is that by embracing and nurturing the many Seeds of our Future, our community will begin to flourish with new families, increased spirituality, fellowship and boundless love.

In the Fall of 2016, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic Armenia, we will host a special Pomegranate Celebration for our community. Please join me as we begin our fruitful journey to Nurture the Seeds for our Future!

In Christ,
